The Chief's Farewell

In a surprise move, it's been announced that the funeral of William Rehnquist, a Lutheran, will be held at St. Matthew's Cathedral, seat of the archdiocese of Washington. Why St. Matt's was chosen as opposed to the traditional default of Washington National Cathedral (which easily fits four times the number of people) is anyone's guess.

The obsequies for a sitting Chief Justice fall under the protocol of the Official, as opposed to State, funeral. Whatever the case, Wednesday's ceremony will be the first of its kind in a Catholic milieu since JFK's St. Matt's requiem mass.
