Pharaoh Conquers the Air
Those among us who keep an eye on the church's mass-media dabbling might be interested in recent doings here in the Land of the Pharaohs.
The archdiocese has spent God knows how much money buying spots on local TV to plug the Sunday night closing event for the Year of the Eucharist, "Prayer on the Parkway" -- or, as it's come to be known in some quarters, the "Tournament of Monstrances Parade."
Rigali's heavenly serene mug pops up on the screen, speaking from the sanctuary of the Cathedral-Basilica, inviting everyone to come out. The streets will be closed, the third-graders will be bused in, the priests will process to be seen and, well, be seen (in cassock and surplice, of course -- anything less is but pigshit in this town).... Philadelphia Catholicism at its finest pre-grand jury report splendor. And with the report imminent, could this be the last hurrah?
Two numbers to look out for: 1. turnout and 2. how many thurifers and torchbearers attend the Blessed Sacrament. Divide the two to come up with the "laypeople-per-thurifer" quotient. That's the key figure -- the lower it is, the better.
Hey, we've got cultic cred to maintain. Don't mess.

Despite the ornate displays and your cynicism, (I love ya, Rock but your tone scares me) Jesus will be praised and worshipped and graces will flow on the streets of our fair city, and the humble, simple faithful will be touched. And just how is this bad?
jeff: "I haven't noticed anyone calling for your death; good grief!"
It's happening.... not here, but at some other blogs of dubious repute. Kinda' disturbing actually when you consider these are just "words on a screen".
