In a first, the Episcopal Church -- the American branch of the Anglican Communion -- has elected a woman, Kathleen Jefferts Schori, the bishop of Nevada, to serve as presiding bishop and primate of the church.

The vote of the ECUSA's House of Bishops was confirmed by its House of Deputies, and the PB-elect will be begin her ten-year term in January.
