Bishop to Priests: You Are Loved

I've just been sent a recent letter from Bishop Patrick McGrath of San Jose to his priests and deacons, addressing the coming Instruction. Very interesting -- haven't heard anything of this kind from any other bishop.

It reads, in part
You have undoubtedly heard news reports this past week about a document that one of the Roman congregations may be issuing soon on the topic of homosexual candidates for orders.

It is difficult, if not impossible, to comment on a document that I have not yet seen. However, I believe it is important for me to state what I hope is obvious: I value you, each one of you, and your ministry in the Diocese of San Jose. We are one family....

I know that some of you may be disheartened and discouraged at this time. We need to support one another now more than ever, if we are to continue to respond to the call of the Lord and to fulfill the promises we made when we were ordained....

Please know that each of you is in my daily prayers and even more so when the times are challenging.... In the meantime, please pray for one another . . . bearing each others' burdens as brothers in the common work we share.
Now, I don't know about you, but that's just nice. And as our good priests will tell you, they haven't gotten a lot of nice from the bishops in recent times.

Crackin stuff, PJ.

Every bishop will probably need to do something like this depending on what the document says. If not a letter, then serious heart-to-heart conversations with serious priests who might be tempted to think that their vocations weren't authentic, etc. I doubt that there will be all that many such bishops.

It would appear Bishop McGrath thinks, or knows, that most of his priests are homosexual, and wants to limit the damage to their morale of this instruction until it can be swept under the rug. Now that is nice.
