In one last above-board development of a very long day, AP reports that Msgr Howard Calkins, the lone archdiocesan official who gave on-record voice to the letter's sentiments, has "offered his resignation" as a regional vicar and issued a public apology to Cardinal Egan.
"I write to you with sincere regret for my careless and ill-considered comments," he wrote. "At a time that I should have been blessed with wisdom, I was foolish."
