In the current edition of The Tablet, Robert Mickens in Rome has reported that the Encyclical -- coming to a bookshelf near you on 8 December -- will focus on the First Letter of John.... Mickens' (superlative) Vatican sources say that the letter, 46 pages in length, will either be called Deus est Amor or Deus Caritas Est -- both very Latin ways of saying "God is Love."
Now I'm off to B&N to pick up the John Allen treatment of The Work, released today. I should be getting my copy signed in due course....

Given what the then Cardinal Ratzinger has written on this subject, we live in happy hope that the upcoming Encyclical will be profound, evocative, and inspiring. His meditation on Eros in his Communion & Liberation message a couple years ago has already explored some of these themes. It is indeed the New Springtime of the Church!
