Ruminations
Just so everybody knows, I love sushi. To get out of my head for a bit while sitting on some good grass with a cheap lunch or dinner of tuna and salmon rolls has me in a much better state at its end than I was going into it. For this yuppie, it's a very purifying spiritual experience.
For all the snowflakes headed to various destinations for Labor Day, safe travels -- and may the gas bill not be too high! I didn't even bother to look at the BP board on my earlier drive out, but I'm told there was a spike in Philly today to around $3.20 for a gallon of regular. This is why the good Lord gave us New Jersey (15 minutes across the bridge my grandfather built): full-service and it's routinely 20 to 30 cents cheaper per gal than here in the Big Time. And, oh yeah, the booze is cheaper there, too... double trouble.
Blogger, in its goodness, allows for a short summary statement beneath the title of a blog. This would give me an opportunity to put a slogan up -- as if the name of this thing wasn't luscious enough, right? The one I had in mind was "Where ecclesiastical careers come to die," but that's a bit harsh. I could also do something with my beloved analogy of pulling wings off butterflies, but that's a bit much, too. So if anyone out there has any ideas, drop 'em in the combox or zing 'em my way. I know how truly brilliant you all are. I mean that.
Those of us who partake of the eighth sacrament (the iPod) know that iTunes is the devil. You find one thing you want and end up having spent $85 in 15 minutes. Fortunately, I haven't submitted to that level of excess in a while -- because I haven't been able to -- but the other night I logged in to buy a new release (for the especially curious: "Plans,"the latest Death Cab for Cutie album -- yes, the band's name is Death Cab for Cutie) and ended up downloading some Holst, Nick Drake and Aerosmith, among others.... Further proof that the boy can't be controlled.
As back to school time draws near here in the Northeast, it's rankings season. And as if I needed more proof that I was blessed with an amazing education, my beloved alma mater cleaned up on the US News list with the #4 ranking nationwide. Hurrah for the Red and the Blue! And, if that wasn't enough, my high school (Masterman, here in Center City Philly -- where my teachers were better Catholics than most Catholic school teachers I've known) topped the list of the Best Schools in the Region in this month's Philadelphia magazine. And yet, for all that and the fact that I'm getting 1,500+ readers a day, I still can't land a full-time writing gig.... Is something wrong with this picture?
And as it's back to school time -- well, not for me, but still -- it means that my Special Bostonian is on her way back to town.... She's not one of my readers (well, when I don't force her to be), she really doesn't have a clue of exactly what I do when she's not around, just that I pop up on TV and in the print pages from time to time, looking fabulous and talking about what I love... And that's the way I like it.
A blessed and happy weekend to all.
