John Noonan (above right) -- the 1984 Laetare Medal winner
recruited by Notre Dame's leadership to fill in at the commencement after its
intended recipient for 2009, the former US ambassador to the Vatican Mary Ann Glendon,
declined the US church's most prestigious prize.
