Ruini Speaks
A top Italian cardinal said Monday that common-law status might be applied to offer some legal protection to unmarried heterosexual couples - offering a rare exception to the Catholic Church's condemnation of de facto unions.Cardinal Camillo Ruini gave no indication the recognition would be extended to same-sex couples and said any protection should stop short of envisioning "something similar to a marriage."
This comes from Ruini's "State of the Nation" address to the Italian bishops in their particular assembly yesterday -- he is, of course, the pope's vicar for the diocese of Rome and, by appointment, president of the Italian Episcopal Conference.
I have the full-text of this speech, but it runs 11 pages and I'm a bit too swamped right now to do excess translation....

That's somewhat of a different take than what Papabile published yesterday.
Assuming that Ruini supports some limited protection of legal or social rights of unmarried domestic arrangements (health care?) he seems to be joining the ranks of Levada and the Archbishop of Melbourne whose minds are seemingly on the move on these issues. On the other hand, the structures that will take place across Europe will be something that these bishops will probably not be able to support.
