Voice of the Foolish

OK, it's balance time.

Just when Steve Krueger of Voice of the Faithful writes a smart column about the next step for a church in cleanup mode, the group's NY affiliate takes the goodwill his piece earned and blows it out of the water.

I received this e.mail earlier:
Dear Friend,
Thomas J. Reese, S.J. was recently forced to resign as editor of America magazine. If you are as outraged as we are by this unfair action by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, join us in signing a petition of protest....

Oh, God. Here go the libs again -- so educated, yet so terribly stupid.

Per usual, VOTF is exhibiting three traits best left at the door: 1. A propensity for being sore losers (almost as sore as the Levada-haters who give B16 lip-service); 2. A horrific misunderstanding of how the church works, its culture and context and 3. They're dragging Tom Reese's dignity through the mud.

Reese gave everyone the best example when he just walked away and comported himself through the storm with impeccable grace and dignity while the vultures made noises about sending thank-you cards to the Pope. The man proved himself as a true Christian with a richer spirituality than anyone who has ever trashed him, and America's follow-up reminded its readership that an editor may be gone, but more importantly the fight for the underprivileged, the abused, the powerless continues -- and that is the mission of the church.

Meanwhile, Deal Hudson fiddled, groped, and raised money.

But VOTF has to do a gripe tour and announce that they'll deliver their petition to Levada. It's just wrong and disrespectful. CDF has spoken, it's done, just move on and look to the next thing.

The libs might just call me stupid for saying that. It's not stupid, it's called realism. It's called maturity; adult faith, if you will.

The church could use a good dose of both on all sides.
