Let's Make a Deal
Before all else, a brief word about Americagate.
Why did Tom Reese get thrown to the dogs? (And yes, Mr. Tiara-on-the-Desk, that actually did happen to Fr. Tom.)
One word: Witchcraze.
God love Fr. Reese for submitting to the bounty on his head with grace and dignity. For decades, Tom has been the image of professionalism, Christian charity and understanding with the press, hence their loyalty to him and their outrage at the way he's been made into a pawn. His shining qualities have made this tragic moment his finest hour.
Just think: If this were happening to self-proclaimed Benedictine darling Joe Fessio, he would've already used the attention to make eight appearances on EWTN, market four books, fan worldwide conservative rage and to hop on the (Rich Donor Name here) gravy train, using a private jet to fly from mantilla rally to mantilla rally.
And the CWNews folk want an address to send thank-you cards to whoever made this call? That's just sick.
"We are supposed to be preaching from the rooftops," Reese said in a recent interview. This just might be the most eloquent homily of all.... A man who takes his vow of obedience seriously... Not even I get to see that everyday.
Fessio, take note. Tom, you're in our thoughts.

But the Burkefolk have been distracted from their thank-you notes. Their Rick James has returned.
Not the Rick James, my gentle snowflakes. Neocon hero Deal Hudson is risen, opining about the church and what Catholics should think and not think about Benedict XVI.
Does this aura of moral authority mean that Hudson didn't sexually assault an underage Fordham coed who he plied with booze? No, that's still true.
Granted, none of us are perfect -- my temper and impatience alone keep me far from that height. But Hudson's return -- bankrolled by the "Morley Institute for Church and Culture" (a one-person think-tank created by his old bosses to sweeten the Deal after he had to resign in disgrace from Crisis) -- just makes the whole church look bad. There's nothing CDF can do about it, as they did with America, because it's private money as opposed to those dangerous Jesuits who just happen to *GASP* live their faith.
Living the faith? Horrors!
Yet after all we have been through, can we not acknowledge that it's a detriment to the whole Catholic community when an operative with a sex abuse rap in his history advertises "A Catholic look at Society, Culture and Politics"?
Before anyone starts screaming "heretic" at me, listen to one of Deal's contributing editors:
"[Hudson] has clearly got a problem... even the bad bishops (in the clergy sex abuse scandal) shifted guys with problems from one parish to another. [By creating the Morley Institute] they're going to change the brass plate on his office door. ... It's like a bishop changing a guy's title and not even moving him to a different parish."
See?
Come on, people, even Marcel Maciel is under investigation -- under then-Cardinal Ratzinger's direct orders. Can we not do better than this raw Deal?
Until Hudson gets clipped for good, and that other bishop-approved moral paragon, Rev. DeLay, is finally seen to be more a champion of extortion than of human life, conservatives have forfeited any claims of credibility in argument. Points are useless, emotions pointless. No one asked anyone to be casting their lot with sleaze -- it's a choice, and that speaks volumes more than anything else.
Of course we believe in forgiveness and redemption here, but this might help: Public Sin (i.e. sexual assault), Public Penance (i.e. refraining from monumental hypocrisy, however lucrative). Stop and ask yourself: if Hudson's good to go, should we bring Cardinal Law back to Boston....?
Exactly. Thank you.
Suffice it to say, Hudson may have his Window.... But I have a Loggia.
The difference? He could use some Windex.

Not sure why a person who agrees with Hudson on this or that matter loses credibility merely because it's Hudson he's agreeing with. I'm not giving Hudson his story assignments, I'm not signing his checks, and I have no power to remove him from public life.
You're obviously a smart guy, and you seem to be setting yourself up in opposition to "the conservatives." I'm wondering if you've defined what makes a person "conservative" somewhere back in your archives. I'm not trying to play word games here - when it comes to Church matters, there really does seem to be a wealth of definitions.
I do feel moved to comment on the following:

I don't recall his doing any of this when he was moved to his hospital chaplaincy after he started Campion. He obeyed his superior, just as Reese did.
